Mâcon, a renowned AOC region in the southern part of France’s Bourgogne, is known for its exceptional natural conditions that produce high-quality Bourgogne wines. The region’s limestone and clay soil, coupled with a warm climate, allow the grapes to reach ideal maturity, resulting in wines with a full-bodied structure and subtle mineral notes. With 27 distinct appellations, each contributing to the wines’ diverse flavors, Mâcon wines are characterized by roundness and fresh fruit aromas. They represent 16% of Bourgogne’s total production, with an annual yield of 30 million bottles, making Mâcon a key wine-producing area in the region.
Recently, 14 wineries from the Mâcon region visited Singapore and hosted a successful wine tasting event at Raffles Hotel. Nearly 140 industry professionals attended the event, where they sampled a variety of white and red wines from Mâcon. Participants gained a deeper understanding of the region’s terroir and wine styles, experiencing the versatility of Chardonnay and the allure of Gamay wines.
Mâcon’s Chardonnay wines are highly regarded for their complex bouquet of floral and citrus aromas, along with herbal and fruity notes. These wines showcase a range of expressions on the palate, offering a fresh, dry, and fruity profile with a pleasant roundness and balanced acidity. On the other hand, Mâcon’s Gamay wines stand out with their lively flavors of raspberry, cherry, and spice, coupled with a light body, refreshing acidity, and smooth texture. These red wines are ideal for those new to red wine, providing a rich and accessible tasting experience.
