Irene’s tragic story was revealed by her sister-in-law, Ivon Kabey. Ivon strongly suspects that the cause of her sister’s death was due to delayed treatment and refusals of referrals at several hospitals in Jayapura City. The family arrived at Yowari Regional Hospital at 3 PM with Irene in labor, but the delivery process was delayed due to suspicions of a large baby, weighing four kilograms. The family requested a referral because Irene’s condition was deteriorating, but the referral letter was only completed close to midnight, followed by the late arrival of the ambulance at 1:22 AM. The referral process was not as smooth as expected. Irene and her unborn baby visited three hospitals but did not receive any treatment, leading to her passing away during the journey. In a desperate situation, each hospital they visited refused to treat Irene for various reasons. The referrals to Dian Harapan Hospital and Abe Hospital were rejected due to full wards and facility renovations, they tried going to Bayangkara Hospital but were not accepted without an upfront payment of Rp4 million, and as they were on their way to Dok II Hospital, Irene passed away at 5 AM. Ivon expressed regret over the events leading to her sister-in-law’s death. She believed that Irene was not given proper treatment from the beginning, as they were repeatedly rejected by multiple hospitals until her tragic passing during the journey with her unborn child.
